I'm working on the body section of the Anker sweater and got stuck at the part where it says to "cast on five new stitches at the underarm using a spare cable or length of yarn." I'm not sure how exactly to do that or where the five stitches are supposed to go. Do I cast them directly onto the needle holding the body stitches, or do they go on a separate yarn piece first? A little guidance would be awesome.

I believe you can cast those five stitches directly onto the working needle that's holding the body stitches. right between the front and back sections where the sleeve stitches were set aside. I think you can use the backward loop or knitted-on method for this. Good luck!

Yes, youre right! No worries!! The spare cable or yarn is just to hold the sleeve stitches, not for these new ones.

@cremebrulee799 and @ravenshield explained it well but just to add, the "spare cable or length of yarn" part is just a handy way to temporarily hold those stitches, especially if you're using a provisional cast-on method, so you can easily pick them up later when you join for the sleeves.
The goal is to create a seamless transition from the body to the underarm shaping.
Hope that helps!
