Lost in my first sweater pattern

I'm not so new to knitting, I have only made a couple scarves before. My daughter asked me to knit a sweater for her favorite stuffed animal. I found a beginner pattern, but I'm totally stuck on the sleeve instructions. Google didn't help, so I'm hoping someone here can explain what "Cast on 8-6-4 sts" actually means.

@Sophiee That usually means you start with 8 stitches, then decrease to 6, and finally 4 as you follow the sleeve shaping. Think of it as a step-by-step decrease to get the right taper.

Thanks so much for clearing that up, I thought it meant casting on multiple times, but your explanation makes sense now. I'll follow the decreases step by step for the sleeve shaping
